The current issue of NOW magazine looks very familiar. Is it just me, or does this cover exude a striking likeness with the August 2012 issue of New York magazine.
I first took note of NOW “borrowing” liberally from TIME magazine’s iconic X format, which the editor of NOW brushed off dismissively by saying “Sometimes an X is just an X,” as quoted in the Toronto Star. Cheeky.https://www.coverssell.com/?p=6757
Then we reported on a second cover that appeared to be quite similar to New York magazine. https://www.coverssell.com/?p=6772 This was discussed on AM 640 radio, when the morning host asked the editor about the similarities in the lead-up to a panel discussion on Chris Spence, plaigarisim, and the TDSB. This was also scoffed at by the editor of NOW.
Yet here we are again. Compare and contrast.
In the meantime, The Grid continues to garner international recognition for their leading edge design.http://www.canadianmags.blogspot.ca/2013/02/the-grid-named-best-designed-newspaper.html#links
Yeah, yeah. But all’s fair in love and war. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. As Picasso says, “Good artists borrow, great artists steal.” The great ones recognize the power of a great idea and make it their own, rather than timidly tiptoeing… Sometimes NOW’s execution is better than New York’s, sometimes not, but frankly, its a complement to New York magazine, and nothing for anyone on either side to get head-up about. Let’s sell some mags.
