Editor, Mark Reid, says:
One hundred years. One hundred pages. In October 2020, Canada’s History/The Beaver magazine celebrates a century of publishing with a special coffee table-style SIP showcasing the incredible photography that appeared in The Beaver over the decades.
Curated from a collection of more than 50,000 images, the photos explore the cultures and lives of the Indigenous peoples of the North; reveal the historic diversity of wildlife and landscapes; and illustrate the tremendous changes that occurred over time as new technologies — from snow shoes to steamships — spread across the region.
Produced in collaboration with Indigenous authors, the special issue also reframes The Beaver and its legacy of colonization — empowering Indigenous peoples who were for so long featured in its stories, yet pushed to the margins of its pages.
Finally, the special issue marks a new beginning for The Beaver, which was renamed Canada’s History in 2010. Beginning in October 2021, Canada’s History will publish a special annual insert edition of The Beaver, focused on stories of the North and the Indigenous peoples and communities of the region.
