Cover Awards Event Results

Posted by Scott On February - 27 - 2013

Last night, Magazines Canada and the CMC, hosted the Canadian Cover Awards.

The event was held at the Courtyard Toronto Downtown hotel.  Deborah Morrison, Publisher of Canada’s History, opened the evening by thanking all the sponsors.  The crowd joined in by singing “happy birthday” to Edra Sefton, of Magazines Canada, who helped stage the show.

Amanda Beattie, Assistant Circulation Manager, Cottage Life Media, acted as the MC.

The Canadian Cover Awards recognize and celebrate the success and importance of magazine covers in Canadian single copy sales. Canadian magazine titles were invited to submit top-selling covers for consideration in seven award categories. Entries were open to issues sold in the 2011 calendar year or early 2012 with final newsstand sales. Newsstand sales were worth 50 percent of a title’s final score, the remaining 50 percent determined by a panel of judges that included a retailer, a wholesaler, a national distributor and a circulation director, who look at artistic merit, amongst other factors.

The winners were:

The Magazine Marketer of The Year is presented annually to an individual who demonstrates true innovation and passion within a successful newsstand marketing project. The winner this year is Greg Keilty.

As Publisher of SkyNews, Greg Keilty has overseen a 43.6% increase in total sales over the last year, as well as the release of the magazine’s 100th issue in October 2011. In support of this milestone, Keilty adopted an aggressive promotion campaign that paid off with record sales as the magazine reached its highest numbers ever for a single issue. A respected and dedicated leader in the industry, Greg Keilty has for many years displayed the ongoing passion and commitment to magazines and the role of the newsstand that have made him this year’s Newsstand Marketer of the Year.

Posted by Scott On February - 25 - 2013

This morning, a revised list of Finalists for the Cover Awards was released.  Apparently there was a mix-up with respect to an “internal review of eligibility.”

What I take this to mean is that some magazines’ sales totals were not 100% closed and final when the numbers were submitted.

NOW Does it Again!

Posted by Scott On February - 19 - 2013

The current issue of NOW magazine looks very familiar.  Is it just me, or does this cover exude a striking likeness with the August 2012 issue of New York magazine.

I first took note of NOW “borrowing” liberally from TIME magazine’s iconic X format, which the editor of NOW brushed off dismissively by saying “Sometimes an X is just an X,” as quoted in the Toronto Star.  Cheeky.http://www.coverssell.com/?p=6757

Then we reported on a second cover that appeared to be quite similar to New York magazine. http://www.coverssell.com/?p=6772 This was discussed on AM 640 radio, when the morning host asked the editor about the similarities in the lead-up to a panel discussion on Chris Spence, plaigarisim, and the TDSB.  This was also scoffed at by the editor of NOW.

Yet here we are again.  Compare and contrast.

In the meantime, The Grid continues to garner international recognition for their leading edge design.http://www.canadianmags.blogspot.ca/2013/02/the-grid-named-best-designed-newspaper.html#links

Is that Canada Goose?

Posted by Scott On February - 15 - 2013

The 2013 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue is hard to miss on newsstands this week.

For the second year in a row Kate Upton was choesn as the cover girl, and why not?

Rule #30:  If it works, keep doing it

According to a story in the Globe & Mail, that coat she is wearing is a Canada Goose branded coat.  Perfect for those arctic conditions when wearing a bikini, right?

In case you missed last year’s cover taken in a decidely warmer climate, here it is.

Perfect Pansies

Posted by Scott On February - 5 - 2013

Nothing quite heralds “Spring” as the arrival of flowering Pansies.  Which is why GardenMaking magazine (now in it’s 4th year) has chosen this fan favourite as the its star for the cover.

Bright and cheerful, the cover uses a big numerical, a starburst button, and the left hand real estate quite effectively, and color is used smartly to help the eye navigate down the page.

The skybar area was customised to give Western readers some addtional reasons to purchase (see cover on right). Click on images to enlarge.

The Art Director is Gary Hall.

The issue will hit newsstands on February 25th, 2013.
